Karoshi

2BA Collection

The Japanese term “Karoshi” meaning “Death by Overwork” highlights the harsh realities of the fast-paced and demanding world we live in, where people are often sacrificing their health and well-being in the pursuit of success.

This phenomenon can be observed throughout Japan as workers are seen lifeless, tired, and intoxicated out on the street after long hours. This collection explores the themes of exhaustion, burnout, and the loss of one’s true self in the face of societal pressure.

Somber colors, distorted shapes, and deconstructed forms are used to create a sense of unease and discomfort, reflecting the mental and physical toll of Karoshi.

These garments capture the story of these workers and highlight their contrasting strength and vulnerability. Subtle details and shapes reference the Japanese workwear culture and its history of overwork and burnout.

This collection is a tribute to my mom, who experienced first-hand the effects of “Karoshi” and the hard life of a salaryman in Japan.
